1. Guild Wars 2 - Blog Header

As one year ends and another begins, it’s a natural time for gamers to take a look at what they loved/hated in the past year and what they’re looking forward to in the year ahead.  In other words, it’s time for end of the year awards! Let’s take a look and see how Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 did this year.

We were very pleased that Guild Wars 2 won Most Anticipated Game in MMORPG.com’s 2010 Awards with 42% of the votes.  The win likely won’t come to a surprise to the site’s readers, because as MMORPG.com’s Jon Wood explains, “…with a hype rating of 8.72, the game holds the highest sustained hype ever on our site.”

We also won Favorite MMO Company on MMORPG.com with 24.4% of the vote.  MMORPG.com attributed our win in this category in part due to the anticipation for Guild Wars 2, but added “Let’s not forget that ArenaNet also developed the original Guild Wars, a feat that has earned them the love of many MMO gamers.’’

Speaking of Guild Wars, in Massively’s 2010 Player’s Choice Awards, readers chose the original game as Best MMO of the Decade, while Eye of the North was voted as Best Expansion of the Decade.  The fans also picked the Guild Wars community as Best MMO Community of the Decade—we totally agree.

Ten Ton Hammer gave the original Guild Wars the Best Sound and Score in their MMOG Decade Awards.  They described Jeremy Soule’s stirring score as a “powerful musical composition only heightened the experience of the game itself, often becoming an auditory experience that could be likened to a cinematic feature film.”

Guild Wars 2 was the only MMO to make it on Destructoid’s Most Wanted PC Games of 2011.  “Dynamic quests in a constantly-changing world, a legitimate story where your actions actually affect your character and his or her personal story, and a combat system that actually forces you to dodge attacks and maintain careful positioning make this an MMO to watch out for.”

Finally, Game Informer declared Guild Wars 2 one of their Most Anticipated PC Games of 2011, saying, “The original Guild Wars surpassed our expectations in 2005 both by being a very good MMORPG and by not having a monthly fee. Guild Wars 2 is likely to continue both of those legacies, but it’s also turning several other MMO conventions on their head.”

We want to thank all of our fans and everyone who voted for us. We appreciate the confidence, support, and encouragement of our fellow gamers—here’s to another great year!
